Can I bring my elderly parent from my home country to Japan?
We sometimes receive inquiries asking, "I want to invite my parent from my home country, but what should I do?"
It is not possible to invite your parents over with a status or residence of "Dependent", which is the general residence status for dependent family members.
However, if the following conditions are met, it is possible to invite your parent over with a status of residence of "Designated Activities (not specified in the public notice)".
- The parent is elderly (over 70 years old).
- There is no spouse, or if there is a spouse, they are living separately and cannot expect to live together.
- The child in Japan (including the child's spouse) has a certain income and has fulfilled the tax obligation (including cases where the child has filed an appropriate income declaration and is exempt from tax).
If you are thinking of bringing your parent to Japan, please consult with our office.
