Procedures for Foreign Residents When a Child is Born in Japan

Foreign nationals residing in Japan hold a specific status of residence based on their activities in the country. Accordingly, if a child is born to foreign residents in Japan, an application must be filed to obtain a status of residence for that child.

This application must be submitted within 30 days of the child's birth.

To file this application, you must first submit a birth notification (Shussei Todoke) to your local municipal office. However, obtaining a passport for the child is not mandatory at the time of application.

This is because obtaining a passport often takes more than 30 days. If you wait until the passport is issued, you may miss the 30-day deadline for the status of residence application. At our office, we occasionally receive consultations from people who waited for a passport and unintentionally exceeded the 30-day limit.

Please note that if the child is scheduled to leave Japan within 60 days of birth, this application for a status of residence is not required.
