A Five-Year Period of Stay Will Be Added for “Specified Skilled Worker (ii)”
Until now, the available periods of stay for the status of residence of “Specified Skilled Worker (ii)” have been three years, two years, one year, or six months.
A new five-year period of stay will now be added.
Other work-authorized statuses of residence have already offered a five-year period of stay, while “Specified Skilled Worker” has not. With this change, “Specified Skilled Worker (ii)” will finally offer the same five-year period of stay available under other work-authorized statuses of residence.
From April 2027, one of the requirements for applying for permanent residence will be that the applicant has been granted a five-year period of stay.
With the addition of a five-year period of stay for “Specified Skilled Worker (ii),” foreign nationals residing in Japan under this status of residence will also have a path to applying for permanent residence.
