Foreign nationals residing in Japan have a status of residence depending on their activities.

Therefore, if you continue to reside in Japan even after you are no longer associated with the United States armed forces in Japan, you will be subject to the Immigration Control Law and will need to apply for a status of residence appropriate to your activities within 30 days.
Please note that if you are no longer a member of the United States armed forces in Japan and will leave Japan within 60 days, you do not need to apply for a status of residence.
