Changes to the status of residence of "Business Manager" Requirements
The requirements for the Business Manager residence status will be reviewed.
The requirements for applying for a Business Manager residence status are expected to be revised from this October onward. (A public comment process is currently underway.)

The changes to the provisions concerning business scale are as follows:

Until NowFrom October Onward
The business subject to the application must fall under one of the following criteria:

ⅰ.The business employs two or more full-time staff residing in Japan, in addition to the individual engaging in business management.
ⅱ.The capital or total amount of investment is 5 million yen or more.
ⅲ.The business is recognized as being on a scale equivalent to either ⅰ or ⅱ.
The business subject to the application must fall under both of the following criteria:

ⅰ.The business employs one or more full-time staff residing in Japan, in addition to the individual engaging in business management.
ⅱ.The capital or total amount of investment is 30 million yen or more.

Previously, it was sufficient to either employ two or more full-time staff or have capital of 5 million yen or more. However, from October onward, you will need to have capital of 30 million yen or more and employ one or more full-time staff.

In addition, the following requirements will be added regarding the applicant's background.

Until NowFrom October Onward
When an applicant intends to engage in the management of a business, they must have at least three years of experience in business management (including time spent studying management in graduate school) and receive a salary equivalent to or greater than that of a Japanese national in a similar position.The applicant will be required to meet one of the following criteria:

ⅰ.Hold a doctoral, master's, or professional degree in a field related to business management or in a technical or knowledge-based field necessary for the business.
ⅱ.(Even if the applicant intends to engage in the management of a business) have at least three years of experience in business management.


Previously, three years of professional experience were not required for those engaging in management. However, from October, the applicant must have either a designated degree or three years of professional experience.

In addition to the above, the business plan to be attached to the application will also require an "evaluation by a person with specialized knowledge in business management."
