What to Do After Renewing Your Residence Card
Foreign residents living in Japan hold a Residence Card (Zairyu Card), which has an expiration date (with the exception of Special Permanent Residents). To continue staying in Japan beyond this date, you must apply for and receive an "Extension of Period of Stay."
Once your extension is successfully granted and you receive your new Residence Card, there are two essential steps you must take: Updating your My Number Card and notifying your bank.
1. Updating Your My Number Card
While a My Number Card is typically valid for 10 years for Japanese citizens, for foreign residents, the card's expiration date is synchronized with their period of stay. Therefore, you must update your My Number Card as soon as your new Residence Card is issued. Please note that the update process at your local municipal office usually takes about three weeks after application, so it is important to act promptly.
2. Notifying Your Bank
Banks confirm your Residence Card and period of stay when you first open an account. If the bank's records show that your period of stay has expired, they will suspend the use of your cash card after a certain period. By notifying your bank and providing your new Residence Card information immediately after renewal, you can ensure that your account and cash card remain active without interruption.
