If You Fail the Specified Skilled Worker (ⅱ) Skill Examination.

Currently, the Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) program covers 16 fields, and for 11 of those fields, the SSW(ⅱ) status is available.
Foreign nationals working in these 11 fields under the Specified Skilled Worker (ⅰ) status can transition to the SSW (ⅱ) status by meeting requirements such as passing the (ⅱ) skill examination within their permitted period of stay.
Since the SSW (ⅰ) status previously allowed a maximum stay of five years in total, foreign workers had to pass the (ⅱ) skill examination before this five-year limit expired in order to transition to (ⅱ).
Now, a foreign national who fails the (ⅱ) skill examination may be deemed to have "a reasonable ground for staying in Japan for more than five years." If they meet the following requirements, their total period of stay will be extended to six years.
Requirements for the One-Year Extension (Total Stay of 6 Years)

  1. Examination Score Requirement The applicant must have obtained a score of 80% or more of the passing mark in all necessary SSW (ⅱ) skill examinations as stipulated in the relevant Field-Specific Operational Policy.
(This applies only when documentary evidence clearly demonstrates that this requirement has been met, regardless of the date the failed examination was taken.)
  2. Applicant's Pledge The applicant must pledge to adhere to the following:
    • They will diligently work toward passing the SSW (ⅱ) skill examination for which they obtained 80% or more of the passing mark, and they will retake the said examination.
    • If they pass the SSW (ⅱ) skill examination, they will promptly apply for a change of status to Specified Skilled Worker (ⅱ).
    • If they fail to pass the SSW (ⅱ) skill examination, they will promptly return to their home country.
  3. Requirements for the Accepting Organization (Employer) The SSW Accepting Organization (employer) must meet both of the following criteria:
    • The organization has the intention to continue employing the SSW (ⅰ) foreign national.
    • The organization has a system in place to provide instruction, training, and support for the foreign national to pass the SSW (ⅱ) skill examination(s).
