Special Exceptions to the "10-Year Residency Rule" for Permanent Resident Applications
One of the standard requirements for applying for Permanent Resident status is that the applicant must have resided in Japan continuously for at least 10 years.
However, there are special exceptions where this 10-year period may be shortened if you meet certain criteria. Below are the primary examples of these exceptions:
| Condition | Special Exception to the 10-Year Residency Rule | |
| Spouse of a Japanese National, Permanent Resident, or Special Permanent Resident | Must have been in a bona fide marriage for more than 3 years and have resided in Japan continuously for at least 1 year. | |
| Biological Child of a Japanese National, Permanent Resident, or Special Permanent Resident | Must have resided in Japan continuously for at least 1 year. | |
| Holders of "Long-Term Resident" status of residence | Must have resided in Japan continuously for at least 5 years. | |
| Highly Skilled Foreign Professional | 70 points or more | Must have resided in Japan continuously for at least 3 years while maintaining the required score. |
| 80 points or more | Must have resided in Japan continuously for at least 1 year while maintaining the required score. | |
Please note that all other standard criteria for permanent residency must be satisfied, in addition to the residency period requirement.
