When an Application for Permanent Residency is Denied
If your application for a change of residence status is denied, you will receive a notification from the Immigration Services Bureau requesting your appearance. Upon reporting to the Bureau as instructed, you will receive an explanation regarding the reasons for the denial, as well as guidance on how to proceed.
In the case of applications for "Extension of Period of Stay" or "Change of Status of Residence," failing to respond to this notification would mean having to leave the country by your current visa expiration date. Consequently, almost everyone chooses to appear at the Bureau.
However, in the case of a "Permanent Residency" application, you can continue to reside in Japan under your current status even if you do not report to the Bureau after a denial. For this reason, some people who applied on their own choose not to go, but we strongly advise against this.
The reason is that by appearing and hearing the specific reasons for the denial, you can determine the possibility and requirements for a re-application. Therefore, even if your Permanent Residency application is rejected, we highly recommend that you go to hear the explanation.
If you feel anxious about attending the explanation alone, it is well worth the investment to have a Certified Administrative Procedures Legal Specialist (Gyoseishoshi) accompany you to ensure the best possible outcome for your future.
