If your naturalization application is approved
If your naturalization application is approved, you will be given an identification card by the Legal Affairs Bureau where you filed.
However, that is not the end of the process; you will still need to complete the following procedures.
- Submitting a naturalization notification
Submit a "naturalization notification" to your registered domicile or the city/ward/town/village of residence within one month of the date of naturalization. - Returning your residence card, etc.
Within 14 days of the date of naturalization, you must submit your ID along with a copy of your ID to the Regional Immigration Service Bureau that has jurisdiction over your place of residence by hand or by mail. - Selection of nationality
You must select Japanese nationality within two years of the date of naturalization.
Specifically, you will need to go through the process of renouncing your nationality in your country of nationality, then submit a "Notification of Loss of Foreign Nationality" to your registered domicile or the city, ward, town, or village where you live.
If you are unable to renounce your nationality, you will need to submit a "Notification of Selection of Nationality" to your registered domicile or the city, ward, town, or village where you live.
