A 5-Year Period of Stay Will Be Required for Permanent Residency Applications
AKIRA YAMAMOTO.AKIRAUnder the standard requirements for a Permanent Residency application, applicants must hold the longest period of stay permitted for their current status, as specified in the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act. Until now, as a provisional measure, individuals with a 3-year period of stay were eligible to apply.
However, following the revision of the Guidelines for Permission for Permanent Residence on February 24, 2026, this provisional measure will be discontinued. Starting April 1, 2027, applicants must be granted a 5-year period of stay to be eligible for Permanent Residency.
There is a transitional exception: those who hold a 3-year period of stay as of March 31, 2027, will still be permitted to apply for Permanent Residency one time only after April.
