Important Points to Keep in Mind When Applying for Naturalization

The requirements for naturalization in Japan are reviewed and revised from time to time.
One area that requires particular attention is the timely payment of taxes, pension contributions, and health insurance premiums.
In the past, even if payments were made after the due date, an application could still be approved as long as there were no outstanding payments. Currently, however, even a single late payment may significantly increase the likelihood that an application for naturalization will be denied.
Some people may feel that denying an application because of just one late payment is too strict. However, paying taxes, pension contributions, and health insurance premiums by the applicable deadlines is a legal obligation. A late payment may therefore be regarded as a failure to fulfill that obligation.
To avoid accidentally missing a payment deadline, we recommend using automatic bank account transfers or other automatic payment methods.
With automatic bank account transfers, payments will generally be made on time as long as there are sufficient funds in the account.
