Changing from "Student" Status of Residence to a Work Status starting in April
If you currently hold the "Student" status of residence, are attending a school in Japan, and plan to change to a work status for employment starting in April, you can apply for permission to change your status of residence starting from December 1st.
Previously, only the Tokyo Regional Immigration Services Bureau accepted applications from December. However, starting this year, it is now possible to apply for permission to change your status of residence from December 1st nationwide.
Every year, there are many applicants who wish to change their "Student" status of residence to a work status due to starting employment in April, and in some cases, the examination process may not be completed even by April.
If this happens, even if you have secured a job, you will not be able to commence work during the examination period.
Therefore, we highly recommend submitting your application as early as possible.
However, please note: If your current period of stay under the "Student" status of residence expires on or before January 31st, you cannot directly apply for permission to change your status of residence. You must first apply for an extension of your "Student" period of stay. Only after that extension is granted can you then apply for permission to change your status of residence to a work status.
