Changes to the Required Documents for Naturalization Applications
While numerous documents are required for a naturalization application, some of these requirements have been updated as of April 1, 2026.
The specific changes are as follows:
- Taxation and Tax Payment Certificates (Kazei/Nozei Shomeisho)
Now required for the past 5 years (previously the past 1 year). - Documents proving that residence tax is being paid on time (e.g., copies of payment slips)
Now required for the past 5 years. - Certificates of Social Insurance Premium Payment
Now required for the past 2 years (previously the past 1 year).
Particular attention should be paid to the "Documents proving that residence tax is being paid on time."
In the past, it was sufficient to simply have no unpaid or delinquent taxes. However, starting from this update—similar to Permanent Residency applications—the actual timing of each residence tax payment will now be strictly reviewed.
