Points to Consider When Changing Jobs for "Specified Skilled Worker" Foreign Nationals

A considerable number of foreign nationals staying in Japan under the "Specified Skilled Worker" (Tokutei Gino) visa wish to change their jobs.
However, unlike other work visas, you must apply for a "Permission for Change of Status of Residence" even if you are transferring to a new job within the same occupational classification.
No matter how smoothly your job search goes, you cannot legally start working at your new company until this Change of Status is officially approved.
Since the screening process for this application usually takes about two months, we highly recommend that you secure your next job before resigning from your current company.

  1. Notification Concerning the Accepting Organization (Within 14 days after resignation)
If you neglect this procedure, it may act to your disadvantage when applying for a Change of Status of Residence or other visa processes.
  2. Job-Hunting Registration at Hello Work (The Public Employment Security Office)
By registering as a job seeker at Hello Work, you become eligible to receive unemployment insurance benefits.
Additionally, they can introduce you to potential employers. Most importantly, registering at Hello Work serves as official proof that you are actively engaging in job-hunting activities in Japan.
