Status of residence when a foreigner becomes a special adopted child or a normal adopted child of a Japanese
If a foreigner becomes a special adopted child or a normal adopted child of a Japanese national, the status of residence will be as follows.
special adoption | Spouse or Child of Japanese National | |
normal adoption | adopted child under the age of 6 | Long-Term Resident |
other than those above | Dependent |
Regarding special adoptions, prior to March 31, 2020, the upper age limit for adoptees was, in principle, under 6 years old.
However, due to the revision of the Civil Code, from April 1, 2020, the upper age limit for adoptees under special adoption has been raised to under 15 in principle.
