What is the requirement for a permanent residence permit application that “as a general rule, you must have continued to reside in Japan for 10 years or more”?“Permanent Resident”
The "Guidelines for Permanent Residence Permit" published by the Immigration Services Agency sets out three requirements.
One of these is that ”the person's permanent residence is recognized to be in the interests of Japan.''
In order to meet this requirement, "as a general rule, you must have continued to reside in Japan for 10 years or more''.
"Having continued to reside in Japan for 10 years or more'' does not mean that you are recognized as a resident simply by registering as a resident, you must actually reside in Japan.
Of course, you are allowed to leave Japan for temporary return or travel, but please be aware that if you spend more than half a year abroad, your period of stay will be reset at that point.
