New requirements will be added for the cancellation of a status of residence of "Permanent Resident".
Once a status of residence of "Permanent Resident" is granted, there is no residence examination and one can engage in activities in Japan without any restrictions on the period of stay or activities.
However, in the past, a status of residence of "Permanent Resident" could be revoked if the grounds for revocation under Article 22-4 of the Immigration Control Act were meted out.
With the recent revision of the Immigration Control Act, Article 22-4 has been added as a reason for cancellation, and the following cases may also be subject to the cancellation of a status of residence of "Permanent Resident" .
- Being sentenced to imprisonment for a certain crime
- Failure to comply with obligations or intentionally failing to pay public taxes
However, even if one of these reasons for cancellation applies, the status of residence of "Permanent Resident" will not be immediately revoked. Rather, the disposition will be decided after a careful investigation of the facts.
If the decision is made to cancel your status of residence, you will either be changed to another status of residence or your status of residence will be canceled.
This amendment to the Immigration Control Act will come into effect on a date to be determined by government ordinance within not more than three years from the date of promulgation (June 10, 2024).
