Even if a spouse of a Japanese national has a permitted period of stay of only one year, they may apply for naturalization.
For a foreign national residing in Japan to naturalize, they must have continuously resided in Japan for five years or more.
And it is necessary to stay in Japan with a status of residence that can work for the last three years.
However, even if these conditions are met, naturalization will not be granted if the permitted period of stay is less than three years.
However, when a spouse of a Japanese national is applying for naturalization, they may apply if they meet either of the following requirements:
- A Japanese spouse who has had a domicile or residence in Japan for three years or longer and who currently has a domicile in Japan.
- Three years have passed since the date of marriage, and a person who has had a domicile in Japan for one year or longer.
Therefore, when a Japanese spouse applies for naturalization, a naturalization application is granted even if the permitted period is one year.
This is the biggest difference from other statuses of residence.
However, even if you have been in Japan for more than three years, we recommend that you apply for naturalization after at least one year of marriage if you have been married for a short period of time.
Of course, it is important to note that naturalization will not be granted unless other requirements are met.
