The Critical Difference Between the 30-Day and 31-Day "Designated Activities" Status of Residence

In the context of the Status of Residence, if an Application for Extension of Period of Stay or an Application for Change of Status of Residence is examined and subsequently denied, the applicant will be granted the "Designated Activities (Preparation for Departure)" status.
There are two possibilities for the period of stay granted under this "Designated Activities (Preparation for Departure)" status: 30 days or 31 days.

Among those who are granted this status, a considerable number of people wish to find a way to reapply so they can continue to reside in Japan.
For individuals with this intention, whether they are granted 30 days or 31 days makes a monumental difference.

Those granted 30 days essentially have no choice but to depart from Japan. On the other hand, for those granted 31 days, there is a possibility that they can continue to reside in Japan if they meet the necessary criteria and manage to reapply within that given period.

If you are granted a 31-day period and reapply within that timeframe, you will be eligible for a "Special Exception Period" (Tokurei Kikan), which extends your period of stay for a maximum of two months while your application is being processed. Since the official examination results will be issued within this extended period, you will be able to continue living in Japan if your application is approved.

Of course, even if you are granted a 30-day period, it is technically possible to submit a reapplication. However, the "Special Exception Period" does not apply to an authorized period of stay of 30 days. Therefore, if your new application is not approved within that 30-day window, you must depart from the country.

Given that the immigration screening and review process is virtually never completed within such a short timeframe, anyone granted a 30-day period ultimately has no choice but to leave Japan.
