If a foreigner working in Japan is dismissed from the company
Foreigners residing in Japan have status of residence according to their activities in Japan.
However, if you do not engage in activities that correspond to your status of residence for more than three months, your status of residence may be revoked.
Then, if a foreigner working in Japan is laid off due to company bankruptcy or downsizing of business, and is looking for a job but cannot immediately find a new job, what will happen to his or her status of residence?
Foreigners who have been dismissed or terminated due to non-convenience reasons such as bankruptcy of their employer or downsizing of business, and wish to continue working in Japan, will be permitted to stay in Japan with their current status of residence.
In addition, if you need to cover your living expenses while looking for a job after being dismissed or terminated, you can obtain permission to engage in activity other than that permitted under the status of residence previously granted for up to 90 days.
This makes it possible to work part-time for up to 28 hours a week.
In addition, the obligation to notify the Immigration Bureau within 14 days of a foreigner changing jobs or retiring from the company will not change.
If any of the above applies to you and you are unsure, please feel free to contact our office.
