If a person with a status of residence of "Spouse or Child of Japanese National(SCJN)" divorces a Japanese spouse, it is necessary to change to another status of residence.
Foreigners who are married to a Japanese national and have a status of residence of "Spouse or Child of Japanese National(SCJN)" are not allowed to continue to stay with the same status of residence after divorcing the Japanese spouse.
If a foreigner wishes to continue to stay in Japan after divorcing a Japanese national, he / she must change to another status of residence.
One of them is the change of status of residence to "Long-Term Resident(LTR)" .
In order for this status of residence of "Long-Term Resident(LTR)" to be recognized, the following is required.
① The foreigner must have had a normal marital relationship between marriage and divorce.
② The foreigner must have sufficient assets or skills to earn an independent livelihood even after divorce.
③ It is necessary for the foreigner to have sufficient Japanese proficiency to carry out daily life.
If the above conditions are difficult, you should consider changing to another status of residence.
If you have divorced your Japanese spouse or are thinking of divorcing, and would like to continue to stay in Japan, please contact us.
